Tuscan trippin'

So what do you get when you put four American’s and an Italian (semi-American) in a car and head to Tuscany for the weekend? A weekend filled with obviously good wine, random road trips and crazy locals.

We should have known from our firstnight in Montalcino, that sometimes not having a plan at all, the best plan to have. Montalcino is a quiet hilltop town nestled in the Tuscan countryside.

Mostly known as a day-trip city, it became our home for our getaway weekend. Three hours from Fano, we packed into the car and made our way over (making sure to stop every hour for a coffee break. I kid you not.)

Coffee break #375

Once we arrived and dropped off our stuff, we let our nose’s point us in the direction of discovery and found a great little hole-in-the-wall place for dinner Friday night. Our table was an array of great local foods brought to us by the restaurant owner, who in true Italian fashion, recommended everything on the menu.

A night out in the piazza

After dinner, we followed the sound of music coming from the Piazza and took a seat at the café to watch what we believe was a theatre performance of some sort, still not sure. But a glass of famous wine was all we were really after, the crazy locals just came with it. (Ok maybe not crazy, but just eeeextremely friendly) One local in particular took a fancy to our group, he worked at a nearby winery and offered a tour the following day. Always up for an adventure, we took him up on his offer and made our way to the Banfi winery where we sampled some of the most amazing wine the region had to offer.

Getting a better taste of the local wine

Our last day, we said goodbye to Montalcino, and headed to Siena for a day trip saying goodbye to Tuscany. For now at least.
